Peak season is coming. Your campaign calendar is filling up, creative is moving, and Black Friday will be here before you know it.
Before things get really busy, now is a good time to decide what you want to learn.
The next few months bring more traffic, purchases, clicks, and customer activity. All of that gives marketers the perfect opportunity to understand what people respond to, from the products that catch their attention to the creative that gets them to seal the deal.
So while you’re setting revenue goals for peak season, set a few learning goals, too.
Look Beyond the Winning Version
A/B testing has given marketers plenty of valuable answers over the years. Version A beat Version B. This subject line got more opens. This CTA drove more clicks.
But averages can only tell you so much.
Lifestyle imagery might perform best overall while product photography gets a particular group to purchase. Urgency might work for frequent buyers while loyalty messaging catches the attention of another audience.
One travel brand recently saw this play out with AI-powered decisioning. The team discovered that a relatively small group of customers responded particularly well to images showing the inside of a stateroom. That insight gave the creative team something valuable to work with: some customers wanted to see more of what their trip would actually look like.
Peak season gives you a lot more opportunities to spot patterns like these.
Pay Attention to What’s Behind the Click
Subject lines and CTAs still deserve a place in your testing plans. But there’s a much bigger pool of information to learn from.
Look at product categories, imagery, messaging, offers, price points, loyalty status, recent browsing behavior, timing, and frequency. Which combinations are getting someone to engage? And does that change from customer to customer?
A retail brand, for example, tested abandoned-product recommendations against its standard new-arrivals experience. The personalized recommendations drove a 71% lift in click-through rate.
That result gave the team something they could keep using. When recent browsing behavior was available, it became a signal for deciding what products to show that customer next.
Take a Page From Paid Media
Think about how paid media works today. Marketers provide the strategy, audience signals, creative, and parameters. Technology can then learn from performance and make decisions across a huge number of interactions.
Meanwhile, many owned-channel teams are still deciding months in advance who gets what campaign, journey, segment, and creative variation.
Programmatic CRM brings that paid-media approach to email and mobile. Marketers still set the strategy and determine the content available, while AI helps decide which experience to serve each customer based on what it knows about them in that moment.
And yes, your Black Friday campaign can stay on the calendar.
During our recent Inside Programmatic CRM webinar, the panel agreed that major marketing moments like Black Friday aren’t going anywhere. What will continue to evolve is the experience each person receives within them.
Decide What You Want to Know by January
Peak season can get hectic quickly. Give yourself a few specific questions to answer before you’re in the thick of it.
- Which creative attributes get high-value customers to engage?
- Which products catch the attention of newer shoppers?
- How do people respond to promotional versus product-focused content?
- Does the amount or timing of communication change what someone does next?
You don’t need to tackle every question at once.
As Bryan Brammer, Senior Director of Marketing Enablement & Campaign Operations at Princess Cruises, shared during Inside Programmatic CRM: “We always focus on the use case first, the why, not the what or the how.”
Pick a few things you genuinely want to understand, give yourself enough variety to learn from, and pay attention to what customers tell you through their behavior.
By the beginning of 2027, you’ll have more than a recap of which holiday campaigns drove the most clicks or revenue. You’ll head into the new year with a clearer picture of what different customers respond to and fresh insights to build on.
Peak season is about to give you more customer signals than almost any other time of year. Make sure you know what you want to learn from them.
